 Hard drive recovery
« Thread Started on Aug 26, 2008, 9:59pm »

I have a friend here in oswego who has a hard drive that (we suspect) has a short circuit somewhere. He has a lot of important data and is willing to pay to get it recovered... anyone know of somewhere that could perform this service.

Update it twice a month, save your data, save your environment.

Far as I can tell, your friend is fucked, my dad's also at a loss for solutions if you actually have a short.

the drive that died actually was an external, which died mid data transfer.

This would have been something to include in the OP. Maybe the cord is just fucked up? Did you try different USB cords to eliminate that issue?

That is not the problem. You see, we took the drive out of the enclosure and attempted to run it in a computer. The psu's circuit breaker tripped, meaning almost definitely that the drive is short circuiting.

If the drive is short circuiting, then there is no actual problem with the data on the drive. If you can find and repair the short, then the drive is fine. No data loss would be incurred.

Also, necropost.

Thats what we are thinking. We are trying to get a new circuit board for it, but they aren't too easy to come by alone

A data recovery of a 300g seagate hdd is 1500 dollars. We are looking to replace the broken part (the circuit board). The obvious solution is to buy a new hdd and switch parts, but I believe you all fail to realize how little we want to pay for this.
